IIRC after a while the resistor stopped being physically in the key but imbedded into the plastic part of the key and it was more of a RFID type reader in the ignition that sensed the resistance.

Ultimately you only have yourself to blame - for buying a VW in the first place.  

I can almost guarantee it was a VATS issue.  I had a similar problem with my SC2 in that the VATS resistor in the key went bad.  

We have a soft-side crate for the car that fits both of our dogs (a havanese and a maltese).  The maltese does great - once we’re on a highway he falls right asleep.  The havanese is a different story.  Sleepytime treats, drugs - nothing phases him and he fights sleep the entire time.  Up to 10 hours.
