That could be. Since they're magic, they might have been created by some sort of alien mage as protectors of his/her people, but the gems realized that they were superior to their creator and his/her race and wiped them all out, claiming their Homeworld as their own.

I don't think she'll go full white knight and go out of her way to help save. Anyone I just think it'll be a "right time right place" sort of thing. LSP has a huge fight response when confronted with danger. I think that'll be important (whether that's good or bad).
