I don't get you point. The French empire was unusually egalitarian in most cases.French subjects were French citizens and entitled to rights and could move to France. Judged by the standards of the time it was rather good.

France clearly still has prouder military history. When did France twice raise the white flag under enemy occupation. Maybe if you studied WW2 you might have an understanding of what happened. The French and BEF armies were much smaller, less well equipped and using outdated tactics. They fought bravely in many cases…
