It is not much the energy content that differs, rather that when the engine detects knock it will advance (retard? I always mix them up) ignition to prevent it, thus running less efficient.

Okay, you are right.

Thing is, we come “educated” in the sense that we know the tech specs, the mileage, et cetera - some are like me and anally look up what VIN number series are commonly affected by what flaws and recalls on used cars - but we are there to see if we LIKE the car.
