That's what I thought too, but I've seen a lot of comments that don't seem like they associate the joke with the commercial. I think Tina Fey is mostly responsible for my pop culture knowledge via 30 Rock references and my intense Googling of them.

This is a show with an racially-integrated cast, and it's working its way through stereotypes. Given that they've already go the white lead choosing the Asian guy over the white guy, that suggests a progressive bent to the show. I say, give it time.
