Maybe for owner operated cabs. But most cabs in the US (at least in major cities) are just rented from cab companies. The driver may well have less invested than your typical Uber driver.

Uber’s standards are not spectacular, but the fact the car is tied to the system does introduce accountability that wasn’t there unlicensed cabs before. I don’t know how standards are in Hungary, but it doesn’t seem like there’s any reason to believe Uber drivers are significantly less safe than licensed cabbies here…
