I think the argument is that you’re being too conservative in your estimate of the 203 people that didn’t vote for Clemens. I would say at least 200 of those voters aren’t voting for him strictly because of his PED use.

I’m not comfortable using just raw numbers for the average, considering there were 2 protest ballots and a number of other strange 1-2 player “message” ballots. I know that, but I’ve seen multiple voters cite that incident specifically as their character clause argument for leaving him out.

I mean, Bonds only got 54%, so if you count 45% as the PED penalty, it seems about right for his first ballot. (Manny is never getting in though)

Oh definitely, I think the limit is stupid, but it wouldn’t even be an issue without writers refusing to put the PED guys in.

You nailed it. If Bonds and Clemens got in first ballot like they should have, Edgar got in shortly after and Schilling didn’t keep threatening to lynch everyone voting for him, the ballot would look a lot cleaner, and there would definitely be some votes thrown Posada’s way, at least enough to keep him over 5%.

If I’ve learned anything from the last 12 months, it’s that the best way to get people to love and respect you is to constantly doubt their patriotism.
