Safety vests with reflective stripes are compact, cheap, and literal life savers if you are on the side of the road at night.

High vis vest as well. Helpful for nighttime breakdowns.

And of course, a really good flashlight. 

A collapsible 4way lug-nut wrench is awesome to have and doesn’t take much room. Same with a pack of medical gloves and a first-aid kit.

Also, don’t remove your OEM jack for “weight savings” like my supervisor did in his Audi... before he got a flat tire.
