We are working with an agent but we’re driving the process. She sends us MLS listings and my husband and I pick the ones that look intersting. We go see any that both my husband and I both pick (a small number) and then will check out any near-by open houses.

A friend suggested that if you do find a house to drive by it at night to see what the neighborhood is like at that time. 

What market are you in? Are you working with a real estate agent? A good real estate agent won’t drag you around to 30 “maybe” houses, they’ll get to know you and then wait until they have a house they think you’ll say “yes” to, to show you. If you are working with an agent, they’re wasting your time.
