I would give a stupid amount of money to have watched that show instead. I was hoping for something better than mediocre.

My issue is specifically the weak writing and overall lack of cohesion. Throwing beloved characters in there, doing shit these characters aren’t known for doing is icing on the shit cake.

I don’t know, man. At least the X-Files reboot had two Darren Morgan episodes.

To be fair, in contrast to Discovery, Picard wasn’t really billed as “just another Star Trek show” or something. It was set up with the grandest of expectations - the best actor in the franchise’s history returning to his career-defining role and having a substantial say in the writing, with one of the best living

I didn’t play ME and I just learned about this, but it fits.

I’m still holding out hope that it’s not a Skynet/Reaper scenario. Sutra is intentionally misinterpreting the message. The super synths are not malevolent but Sutra is planning to use them like how Lore used the Crystalline Entity.

I’m currently binging DS9 and it aged like fine wine. The themes and explorations of issues like slavery, trans rights, civil rights, capitalism felt like it was written yesterday and remained relevant than ever. If they wanted to make a new Picard series, why not just make a DS9 with Picard instead?

At this point, I think it’s safe to say ‘a disappointing Star Trek: Picard’ is a bit redundant.

The beginning-middle-end thing was something I thought about in the Seven/Icheb/pimpsuit episode. It was pretty self-contained, in that it introduced the idea of borg-harvesting, sortof discussed why it was bad, and then sortof addressed the issue by having Seven act as an executioner. (although it still didn’t have

Yep.  Instead of a sequel to next gen, it plays like a sequel to Nemesis.  I half expect another dune buggy chase.

Indeed. Especially not a scared young man raised by strong women in a subculture where transparency, and thus emotional displays, are not just encouraged but expected.

I still wish they’d done a low key series about Picard as a xeno-archaeologist wandering around having scholarly adventures and solving puzzles and mysteries.

(One wonders what the show would be like if Joe Weisburg of The Americans had been given the job)

Starred for pretentious. That’s exactly what it’s missing.

The Soji/Narek/Artifact storyline has definitely been the weakest portion of the series.

Arne Darvin being brought back happened due to a coincidence. Behr just happened to see him at a restaurant while they were writing this episode.

David Mitchell does it really well.

I read an old interview with Chabon where he said the concept of the Kobayashi Maru had influenced almost every character and plot he’s ever written. He said it was one of the most profound concepts he’d ever seen in film, and he had personally thanked Nick Meyer for introducing it in Star Trek II.

I can’t help thinking there’s a gap between the way Picard is now, and the way he once was

I think that’s been the big problem with Whitaker’s run (aside from the EXTREMELY wonky pacing of most of the episodes). They don’t seem to have nailed down what’s unique and specific to THIS Doctor. It’s always taken a little while to nail down, but it’s awfully far into her tenure to still be figuring out what kind
