Which would make his gender irrelevant, which begs the question of why change it if it doesn't matter? It would make Link(ette?) a "token" female character a , "Mrs. Man" character that folks like to hate so much. So in the end, it would end up being criticized heavily where Link currently sees little criticism.

It's irrelevant in that neither character is defined by their gender for the vast majority of their existence, which is fantastic. They're male/female respectively, but their maleness/femaleness never defines who they are as characters, its their actions that define them as characters.
