Actually, I dont think your even allowed to buy the...badge token things for your book with real money, have to use the ingame currency for that. So you can't buy actual advantage.

There is free to play, most Rogue likes are in that vein (Rogue, Crawl, ADOM, Dwarf Fortress), but then there is also 'free to play' that is distributed through market places.
