That’s strange, the general migration was from Alabama to Detroit after the steel industry in Birmingham shit the bed but the auto industry in Detroit was still going. I don’t think he’s conflicted. I mean he said it himself, the only people who can tell he’s black are other black people. Everyone thinks he’s something else, but not black. So perceived proximity to whiteness ensures a conditional kind of safety and privilege.
