I’m sure there are plenty of HR reps who do advocate for their company’s employees, and most probably do take care of minor grievances fairly. There’s just far too many stories like Susan’s that leave me in no doubt who’s side an HR department will take, and who they are ultimately there to protect.

There’s no reason you couldn’t go to HR after you take the matter to your lawyer, but honestly, I have to imagine any legal mind worth their salt would advise against it.
