Do Europeans understand that there are lots of states in the US with different histories of race-related laws? For example that Massachusetts outlawed slavery before the UK did? I don't seem to recall this distinction being made whenever I've been lectured about the history of the US by Europeans.

You really don't need that much. You need a backyard, or a rented public space where you are allowed to bring alcohol.
