@That70sDude: because 1280x720 is a broadcast standard resolution commonly refered to as 720p. 720p is also more common for streaming HD since it is about half the bandwidth of 1080p. Also, its better to scale down than up.

@Dan Clark: This is assuming you have the iPhone screen covering your complete field of view. The width of the iPhone screen would fit in a 6 degree FOV held at 18 inches from your eye. in a 6 degree FOV the human eye can see about 1.44 MP. The entire iPhone screen is about .6 MP. This is under optimal conditions…
