Making assumptions about the thoughts and character of an individual based on their membership in a racial group is the definition of racial prejudice.
Don’t forget that back in the primaries, *anyone* who criticized Bernie for *anything* was axiomatically illegitimate. They were all secretly working for Hillary, because why else would you criticize someone who is a God and perfect in every way. Paul Krugman was a conservative hack according to these people.
Yeah man, I agree that 9/11 was an inside job.
Nice. Out-progressived the progressives.
I can’t. Bernie got screwed. Everything was rigged. Rigged by Hillary’s friends at Goldman Sachs and other neoliberals. Every state should be a Caucus state.
Nah man, I’m angry about this thing right now. I demand to change the rules in my favor.
Someone can be objectively wrong on a claim about verifiable facts. For example someone can claim that the Earth is flat. That actually is wrong. But that’s irrelevant to the question of whether they have the right to express their opinion that the Earth is flat. Their rights don’t magically go away. And in a…
> They do not have a right to be heard, nor do they have a right to a platform.
Yeah but universities are special (not trying to sound sarcastic). Free speech is an ideal that a university should be trying to respect (even if it is not required to do so by law) with very few exceptions.
Is Chait telling people they can’t protest? Or, rather, that they must not silence other people. There’s a difference between the two.
Agreed that this is strange behavior. Interestingly, I can imagine a scenario in which his explanation is consistent, but specifically in the case where his interlocutor is black.
> he application of consequences by a non-governmental actor is not a supression of free speech via SCOTUS.
Ah yes, I’ve been waiting for this. First everybody loves him, then as soon as he has one wobble on the balance beam, he’s an enemy to the Left for life. Another one fails the purity test.
Hold on Bernie. I don’t see him claiming that the tax cut pays for itself. He is claiming that to invest is to take a risk, which is correct. A business isn’t just bootstrapped with the cash from its founder — you’d never get anything off the ground that way. You need capital, and you need people to lend you the…
There’s nothing here that I disagree with. I just don’t see how this translates into justifying trampling on the rights of others. The only reason, for example, that Milo was ever famous was because of these campus incidents. If people instead just let the college conservatives have their meeting, nobody would have…
It depends on what the government is trying to prioritize. If it is trying to induce investment and free movement of capital, then having a lower tax rate on investments is a natural way to do that.
Understood. But the response can’t be “I’m going to kill you” or even “I’m going to silence you”. On one hand I get that this is just college so who cares, but these people are eventually going to graduate and run important things. And I don’t want to be sent to jail someday because I forgot to use the right gender…
I think the argument is that suppressing speech is *not liberal*. And committing acts of violence in response to the mere presence of someone you don’t like is definitely not liberal.
They don’t have to listen to her. But they don’t get to dictate to to everybody else who they can and can’t have on campus.
