You’re right, of course, that rookies don’t have a say in the system. But like it or not, it is the system that was negotiated on by the union and the owners. So yes, it can be unfair to young players, but my point is that it’s unfair to say that what the Lightning are doing is “dirty.”

i agree with your metaphor except for the fact that in hockey there is really only one employer and you can’t really leave if you feel aggrieved. but at that point that’s what a contract is, an obligation by both parties that you signed on your own free will.

It was wrong of Tampa to bench him for so long as a young player instead of letting him develop in the AHL. Both parties are handling the whole thing poorly and the longer Drouin goes without playing the less of a return they'll get in a trade.

The biggest problem with Walsh’s strategy is that now GMs are calling Yzerman and telling him not to trade Drouin right now. No GM wants players seeing this strategy work and thinking they can use it to get what they want as well. Kyle Turris did it, and it worked for him. They don’t want more examples of this playing…
