I'm a windows phone person, but I agree that the NYT article was rubbish.

The reason is, they're trying to get ready for takeoff and want people to pay attention during the safety spiel. Maybe they interfere with the plane, maybe not. Maybe it's a safety/terrorism thing, maybe not. But it's not representative of some larger conformity issue.
