Totally depends on which phone you have, nearly all HTC phones are rootable with nearly no risk of bricking (like less then 1%) if you follow the directions step by step, word by word. Especially if you are rocking some older firmwares.

On Gentoo you need to compile everything yourself, on arch that is done for you. So installation on Arch is a lot faster.

I had the same problem, until I got a great alarm clock that projects the time on the ceiling. I turn it with the LED display away from me and just look at the ceiling for the time. It's only visible when it is really dark and not that bright. Perfect!
