@TuxBobble: I agree, for most games/apps 15 minutes is fine.

@vrillusions: Using an algorithm that can only encrypt 64 bits at a time doesn't mean that only 8 characters are used for a check. For all you know, gawker chops you password up in parts of 4-8 characters uses DES and then stores it in their database.

@xd.Balls: Salt (in this case) only makes the rainbow tables less effective (if a proper salt is used). Because the source code of gawker was released they know the salt!

@trev: Deleting your account now is going to 'fix' anything. If your data was compromised it's out "there" anyway. If not, you're lucky.
