‘07 - ‘10 X3. Reliable engine, available 6-speed manual, 260hp, handles like a BMW, plenty of inside room (I’m 6'4"), tows 3500 pounds, roof rack, tough enough for dirt roads, dirt cheap by now - budget left over for toys.

Craptastic weather not withstanding, even the most casual search for E36 problems will turn up endless discussion about rusted and torn-through rear shock towers on those cars. I would guess many that are still somehow on the road have had the repair done multiple times by now.

I bought it in ‘04 from a guy on Long Island (I’m in central PA) and it was already rusted through. And yeah, it was an all-year car when I had it.

Most likely repair of the rear shock towers, which like to basically disintegrate at will. I had both of mine replaced for just 250 bucks about a decade ago. Was a five year old car at the time, with 65k miles on it, and both sides were completely eroded.
