The plot in the game can be non-existent because it’s all about gameplay. The plot simply serves as a paper-thin framing device.

The Sonic games have no plot but The Sonic movies have good stories. You adapt for the medium not the other way around. 

The only thing that makes me sad about this is that the ‘93 film continues to be referred to as “the worst thing ever”. Like, yeah, it wasn’t what we wanted, but considering that the cast was drunk during half of it and it was filmed in a broiling warehiuse, it came out pretty good! At least it isn’t boring!

Haha, I think there’s some truth to that actually. Like things often deemed as “kids movies” can still have a lot of nuance and interesting narrative and writing choices, while still being entertaining and engaging for kids.
