I’ve been carrying around this minor observation for a while, so what the hell, I’ll dump it here: A lot of the stuff that was fun and memorable about early South Park like the Underpants Gnomes, the all Terrance and Philip ep, the phrase “Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride”, the movie, and those insane sequences with the…
“It’s industrial espionage! You’ve come to steal our great ideas! Well, you’ve been foiled. We have none.”
I have been periodically remembering “New Zealand, Take Your Mum” and chuckling about it for over a decade.
Having gone back and watched the late ‘80s / early ‘90s era recently after only really knowing that material from best-ofs, I was stunned by Jan Hooks’ versatility. One of the all-time greats.
Zeke Nicholson as Peter.
“The View from Halfway Down” made me deeply sad in a variety of ways, the least of which being that it made me think that ep was the direction I wish Tim Burton’s directing career had gone.
Can we acknowledge how insanely good Rick Moranis’ debut is in that third season of SCTV? The guy comes out of nowhere fully-formed and totally versatile without any television or theatre training (he had really only been a radio DJ before), and nearly becomes the most prominent figure among a cast who had been honing…
This is probably the most devastated I’ve felt about a series’ cancellation since Arrested Development back in ‘06, which also felt like it was on borrowed time for most of its run. Venture Bros. was one of those rare parodies of a genre (multiple genres, really) that was not only consistently clever, but also a…
There was a lot to love about season 5, but one little thing I especially want to give a shout-out to was the swift maneuvering around a throw-away Breaking Bad line I feared was going to become a continuity nightmare. One of the great Saul bits from BB is when he explains to Walt that his cynicism stems from the…
I think Gould’s use of “apparently” in his answer is meant to indicate that although the articulated reason for their marriage is that of legal protection, there’s no question that deep down those two crazy kids love each other. No one on this show is quite as good at lying as they think they are, and this is one of…
Yeah, I think the stuff with Tuco and the bros in the desert in ep 2 works well enough, but as the show has gone on it does feel like an early attempt to figure out how Breaking Bad-esque BCS should be. The remainder of season 1 settles down into the more deliberately-paced, Jimmy-colours-outside-the-lines-but-isn’t-r…
Worst dispatching of a recurring character in The X-Files’ long history of doing this. An attempt to ratchet up the tension in the middle of a two-parter, and then given no weight in the second half. Apparently I’m still upset by this a lot!
Yeah, I do get the exhaustion from her character, although I’ll double down on my pedanticism by pointing out that she’s only in season 7 three times as opposed to her eight appearances in season 6.
People deride season 7? I feel like it’s 4 and 6 that people point to as being a little below par, even with them each having some incredible episodes.
Honestly right about now I could go for a show whose highest aspiration is to be a relentless joke machine.
I think you’re conflating the “Monster Parties: Fact or Fiction?” sketch with David Cross’ brief scene in Waiting for Guffman where he’s madly explaining a crop circle. I will be re-watching both of those now, thank you.
I’ve always found the shorts to be the easiest way to get people into the show, and it feels like a missed opportunity that they never even attempted to bring those in during the Netflix era. In order to make the show more accessible I think they wanted to keep the episode runtimes shorter, avoid black and white…
I just couldn’t believe he was cast as something besides a police officer this time.
There’s some weird North American rights issue with that one I’ve never fully wrapped my head around — it’s the lone Ghibli film that neither Disney nor GKIDS have released on DVD or dubbed. There are two English dubs out there done by other studios, neither of which have that great of a reputation.
