It is a strange, beautiful thing when the character who's ostensibly the comic relief also happens to have their shit most together out of everyone.

Elijah may not quite be my favourite character, but he is absolutely the show's MVP when it comes to killer one-liners. Like, he's almost at that Troy McClure/Lionel Hutz level where everything that comes out of his mouth is pure gold.

Don't want to brag, but I've got a mint-condition Paul Krapence AND his rare one-per-shipment variants Glen and Tom.

You played me like a goddamn fiddle.

Before seeing this at the Vancouver film fest, I half-jokingly predicted that I would spend its duration periodically stroking my chin and thinking to myself "Yes, this is certainly $15 worth of interesting imagery." Turns out that was more or less my actual experience. Ultimately I'm glad I saw it though (and it's

The video of him taking his daughter trick-or-treating, from the same Instagram feed, is almost too sweet for words: https://www.instagram.com/p…

I loved how last season kept to a theme, had at least a little narrative momentum each week, and yet (most of the time) the episodes could stand on their own as funny, self-contained stories. The super-serialized format this year of the whole season consisting of three or four plots has made some of the episodes feel

Yeah, I'm kind of bummed (uh, sorry) that it's not on here. It was supposed to be on the album originally but was removed due to rights issues, even though it's apparently fine to have the exact same recording appear on the television show the album spun off from.

He never really clicked as a worthwhile antagonist for Leslie, but once they started playing up his pathetic qualities and mischanneled affection for Leslie in episodes like "The Cones of Dunshire" and "Ron & Jammy" he straight up became one of my favourite recurring characters.

I think Ryan was under the impression that there were two seasons of "Scrubs: Med School" (or whatever) once ABC picked it up? It actually played out like this:

For a network sitcom, I really can't overstate how fresh this show felt when it first came out. Eventually it became too inconsistent and annoyingly formulaic for it to go down as one of the greats, but I still think it and Malcolm in the Middle are unfairly overlooked when people talk about the evolution of the

I always liked how this artwork for Link's Awakening captured the sweetness and the darkness of that game all at once. I wish I could find a larger version of it.

Hertzfeldt's thematic sensibilities are right up Majora's Mask's alley. It would actually be a really interesting match.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how Itoi came to the kind of prominence he did, since I'm not sure Superstar Copywriter is a concept that could exist anywhere but Japan. When I was in Tokyo this past summer I made a pilgrimage specifically to his store TOBICHI, which spun-off from his (apparently really

If you watch their episodes in isolation from all the others, there's kind of a through-line with their running jokes and characters, all culminating in their final episode "Sequel". Pretty cool.

All great choices. A few others I love:

"Ah yes, my documentary" is one of the most perfect line readings I've ever heard.

Of the DVD sets, Volume 3 (which is technically the fourth season) and beyond are the ones to get. The last season of episodes never got an official release, but I don't think it's really that much of a loss. By that point the scale tipped more towards "weird" instead of the "inspired lunacy" (a fine distinction to be

That scene aired almost a month ago and I'm still probably thinking about it every other day. I had my issues with this season, but that was a Perfect Comedy Moment for me.

In terms of major players, it looks like Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Harry Shearer, and Michael McKean are all out. I believe Levy and O'Hara were tied up with Schitt's Creek while this was filming, but I think — if I'm recalling my Marc Maron interviews correctly — there may have been a bit of a falling out
