Yes, it’s so surprising that a movie that looked bad turned out to actually be bad.

Let’s be real - objectifying women is still ok in movies. Objectifying men, not so much.
Harley’s ass gets more screen time than half of the squad.
I know for many of you that’s cool, but I remember the outrage at Schumacher reducing Batman to Batnipples and yet no one cares that Harley is being reduced to hot pants. Robbie does what she can with the character, but there’s not much there. Most of what…
Then imagine if the villain of BvS had been, not Lex Luthor, but The Joker. The BvS “Luthor” acted so much like The Joker sometimes that it’s fairly easy to imagine them switching villains.
“Release your tax forms, i09! Show us you’re on the feminist and Marvel payroll!"
“Here is a comic-book adaptation in which Batman (Ben Affleck) himself – one of the most universally beloved superheroes ever created – hauls Harley from the Gotham River, gives her creepily insistent mouth-to-mouth, then immediately pins her down by the throat, erotic asphyxia-style, when she comes around.” ... Ugh.
Your point about comparing this to Avengers is well stated. Suicide Squad could have really worked well if its characters had already debuted in their respective heroes’ films individually. Imagine if Deadshot had been taken down by Batman first, in a Bat film, and the same with Captain Boomerang in a Flash film, etc.…
There’s no big “conspiracy” here, dude...
The problem with a lot of the DC movies is with character building and it feels like this is going to be a problem in Suicide Squad as well. The Suicide Squad feels like it is meant to be like an Avengers movie. The problem is the same as before though, nearly each of those characters had a movie of their own to build…
I haven’t seen this, but I disagree with the idea that any of these characters need to be properly set up in order to work in the movie. That is the biggest problem with comic book movies in general — the origin story is played out.
“Trust us! BvS is the movie that’s gonna justify this whole cinematic universe of ours!”
The Daily Telegraph here in the UK, while as usual socially conservative, probably hit the nail on the head with their review, calling the film ‘pornography’ due to how much of the screentime is devoted to objectifying the female characters.

From the Animals and Kanye West, to Eminem and the White Stripes
According to this and other reviews I’ve read: Par for the course.
I kinda get the feeling either Ayer or the DC execs saw the buzz generated by the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, and thought, “we gotta do that!” Not surprised the songs don’t gel too well, based off the track listing from the soundtrack.
a strange blend of different tones, stories ,and pacing all mashed into something that has cool individual elements, but never really comes together.
This is approximately what many already assumed about the film. The question that remained (and wasn’t answered by your review) is: How Suicide Squad compares to Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman?
A disappointing DC movie?
