A 2000-year-old institution with over a billion members takes a long-ass time to change. Change is happening faster now than it ever has in its history.

I am an ex-Catholic and been pro-choice for so long this isn’t even a blip on my radar, but my sister is still very much a practicing Catholic, and she’s had an abortion. She’s really struggled with it so if this helps her, I can live with it.
As a non-practicing Catholic trying to remember catechism...I think it is a good thing. We are supposed to go to confession on a regular basis and ask for forgiveness of our sins (it’s a sacrament), so by doing this, he’s making abortion less of a big fucking deal and turning it into a regular ol’ mortal sin, like…
It’s also a move to take abortion off the discussion table when the Pope comes here later this month. Among other things, he’s addressing Congress and what he wants to address is Climate Change, Immigration and Incarceration. He’s already told Catholics to get off the abortion/gay rights tunnel vision tirade and start…
I mean, I’m kinda torn... I hear what you’re saying, but it’s like saying someone who fed you poison ain’t so bad cos they later gave you the antidote... Maybe a lot of those women the pope mentions, wouldn’t be so distraught if they weren’t made to feel ashamed all the damn time!
I agree. I appreciate this gesture, not because the women need absolution, but because this statement DEMANDS that all the other Catholics treat them with more respect. Like, they’re people of worth, they’re not unforgivable baby killer trash, so leave it “to god” rather than throwing insults at these women. Pope…
Yes, I agree. My first thought was “woohoo!” followed by “oh, he’s still calling it “sin”...that is problematic” then “well, it is something”. I don’t know how this will go over but I do think it’s progress.
I’m pretty sure that anyone following news of this Pope is pretty well acquainted with the “Sure, it’s not much but it’s better than nothing” defense.
I think I agree with you. I was trying to figure out how to phrase my thoughts on this.
The idea of absolving a woman for getting an abortion bothers me, but I’m not Catholic or even religious. I guess if I was Catholic, this would be a really good gesture and make me feel somewhat better if I was feeling guilt about…
I have a problem. Now when people ask me “Is the Pope Catholic?” I have to respond, “I honestly don’t know.”
Beets are to be loved, not merely tolerated. Hmph.
Give me Niçoise salad or give me fucking death.
I actually read that article after hearing about this and it seemed like Miley was trying really hard to say “Not my fight, I’m staying out of it” when the interviewer kept asking her about which side she was taking in the Nicki/Taylor Twitter fight. The farthest she went in terms of taking sides was to say “Maybe…
I’m waiting to hear back from a job interview I had last week. I hate interviewing for jobs. I feel both excited anticipation and dread.
I approve of this use of celebrity stage crashing. However, if I ever see them do this at a Taylor Swift concert reducing themselves to a Swiftcessory, I will be very disappointed.
I think Gwyneth Paltrow has told us about her friend, William Joel. A singer you say?
please read all of Demi Adejuyigbe’s tweets about last night’s Taylor Swift show ( a small sampling below)
There must not have been any “SMC students are parasites” letters this week. ;-)
I have a friend who went to Notre Dame, and he used to make this exact argument. He came out of the closet 3 years later and promptly stopped spewing this nonsense because he realized that it doesn’t make any fucking sense.
This guy is the editor-in-chief of The Irish Rover, a conservative school newspaper on campus. Even at a pretty conservative school like ND, it’s a laughingstock.
