I did not like most of those story-lines but there were other elements in that season which I think are essential to the story.

I liked the character but not for Emily she already has enough men in her life.

It was definitely an A episode but there have been other episodes like the season 1 finale that also deserved it.

I think you need to watch season 2 in order to watch season 3 but that is just my opinion.

Hopefully she figures it out eventually, the character seems smart enough.
