We are guardians to our children, not masters. We have a right to guide them and make decisions about their care insofar as those decisions are not demonstrably detrimental to their wellbeing (jury seems to still be out on where spanking falls on the spectrum), but we do not own them the way we own couches and radios

Of course an open-handed smack is not the same as a punch to the eye. I don’t think anybody is saying they are. What they’re saying is both are forms of hitting, and neither should be done to a child.

Whatever your views on spanking, “his kid, his right” is a dangerous and fucked up thing to maintain.

Logical conclusion: don’t post anything online because someone, somewhere might plot to take it and it would be your fault - you wouldn’t “deserve” it per se, but you would definitely be responsible for it.

You’re just proving my point, dear. Byeeeeeeeeeee

Oh my god but I would wear a “White Women, Please Come Get Your Friends” shirt.

I can’t decide if you’re mentally unstable or just stupid. Both, maybe? Sorry, can’t help you figure out your issues.

So, if he sees the light, he becomes an anti-martyr (if you will). Then there is good in keeping him around.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the heads-up.

Oof, “bleeding heart” huh? You got me. That one hurt. However will I function with all this compassion for others and sensitivity to nuance?

No selection process is perfect and there will always be bias. This is why we allow death penalty cases to be appealed again and again. This is also why we should abolish the death penalty as a country - because you can’t be sure of an objective jury and the sentence, once it’s carried out, is irreversible (besides it

It is not the jury’s responsibility to bring their personal views to bear, but to find an appropriate punishment based on the law. If the law allows for the death penalty as a possible punishment, you disqualify yourself if you are opposed to it from the outset.

Why is that stupid?

Nothing will undo it, but perhaps educating him and giving him the therapy he needs will help him see the error of his ways? It won’t undo his actions (and he should definitely spend his life in prison), but true remorse on his part and subsequent steps to give back to society would help, I feel.

Jesus Christ dude. You need to go examine yourself.

To your point about prisons being so nifty: They are not. Maybe in Norway he’d get a cushy life, but American prisons are hellholes, as demonstrated by the number of rapes, suicides, and riots we see there. (And we need reform desperately. Note that crime rates and recidivism in Norway are low.)

How about I justify the fact that he is not an animal, his actions don’t make him an animal, and that saying he is an animal so we can kill him is a really really fucked up thing to say? It is an arbitrary determination of personhood to justify your bloodlust, and nothing more. You are not applying morality equally,

Wtf?? That is an insane argument. Of course he is human and he has the rights of a human.

Oh my god, no they do not!!! What the hell is wrong with you???

That’s some seriously fucked up shit you just wrote.
