For small trunk decks you really need a double pivot. My S60 has double pivot hinges on its super small deck that allow it to basically lay on the rear window. You get regular trunk opening but allow it to completely get out of the way.

The level 3 uparmoreds were monsters. They were actually beyond the weight rating of the chassis. You got the turbo-deisel (usually) but that just meant you could get the thing fast enough to scare yourself.
I can’t tell you how many seriously restored buses I’ve seen that still have all the issues you mentioned and/or need constant TLC. You have to be damn passionate to own one.
