Having only rods in the periphery of our vision serves an important function. Rods are more sensitive than cones and function better in low light levels, and so are better at detecting potentially dangerous movement in our peripheral vision and alerting our brains so we can focus on it and see what it is.

Our eyes are terrible cameras. Luckily our brains are fantastic video processors. Our field of view has holes in the middle of it, a chunk of it is blocked by our nose, the periphery can’t see color, but our brain erases all of that to make it seem seamless.
