I feel like those two examples are another realm of dark comedy where all the characters are inherently, comically unsympathetic and that's the fun of it, but this show seems to have more of a heart for its hero.

Same! She's totally believable in the role — believably anxious and terrified about her son. The moment with Hopper where she defended herself about recognizing Will over the phone was great. But we know she can do a lot more than that, so here's hoping.
