"But as someone who is naturally very thin (with very visible ribs and spine), being told you are "too thin" is just as bad as being told you are "too fat". "

When people use the phrase "real women" they are referring to average women who most definitely don't look like models in either looks, dress size, or body shape.
Welcome to capitalism. A system by which the finance sector and those who control capital exploit the talent and labor of those who don't, severely underpay them for the value offered and reap off the majority of profits that come from it at the top, having themselves barely contributed to the actual creation of the…
Ahh, "experience". The universal palliative for underpaying or not paying people.
EQUALLY offensive and almost always paired with this trope is the "shrill bitchy demanding nagging bitch of a wife/mother". Dear god. The only thing more offensive than the dad and father in law, were the mom and the mother in law. I hated that show so much.
King of Queens was a massive offender, too. But to its credit, the show did have a few episodes where the writers really focused on Doug's strengths as a character and why Carrie would fall in love with him, despite being the definition of a dumb, fat, lazy husband. Still could've been handled better, of course.
That a woman being raped makes her stronger:
I'm tired of the stupid, fat, lazy husband/father. NOBODY LOVES YOU RAYMOND, YOU'RE A PIECE OF SHIT. Usually paired with a waaaay hotter wife that loves him for the way....you know what? I don't know. That guy just sucks. He's just a big baby.
The trope I'd really like to see retired (and this shouldn't surprise anyone): Rape as drama and backstory because the writer is too fucking lazy to think of any other way to "raise the stakes" for women. (I find it specially offensive when abuse is deployed as backstory for villians, and not just women for so many…
The big, black noble savage. Not good at science or romance but good at having the white guy hero's back, but not when something offends their honor.
Castrating the originally strong character as soon as a relationship blossoms. See Han Solo, Lois Lane, MoS.
Because the spice must flow, that is why.
Basically, Herbert's exploration of psychology, religion, government, personhood, control, trappings of prescience, drugs, economy and more, all spun into a story about a boy that hates his mom's boss, is mind expanding.
Solaris by Stanislaw Lem. Accidentally also my favourite book.
Dune up through God Emperor of Dune.
I shared two of my stories yesterday, but recalled the one that scared me the most (and I subsequently try to repress). It's quite short:
I was laying in bed asleep (and I guess dreaming?) when I heard our then-12 year old son crying. Our apartment had a "roommate" layout where the bedrooms are at opposite ends, so I…
Gone Girl is not really a horror movie - it is a thriller with a lot of dark humor. But mostly it is a movie about two assholes being assholes toward each other and then staying together because they are the only asshole assholey enough for each other.
The Happening
It worries me we know basically nothing about this show that is ONE MONTH OUT.
They absolutely did, Vern! I wish I still had it :(
I truly don't know why I subject myself to this thread every year.
