I don't know about that. The standard XBL headset is pretty cheap quality wise and doesn't warrant the price MS is charging. If you notice a significant improvement when upgrading to a better headset, the problem is not with the codec they are using for voice chat, but with the hardware on your head.

Well on MS end the problem would be if they limited the service on PS3 or purposefully degraded the quality on that console. That would amount to sabotage and a nasty lawsuit.

a monopoly is a company having control over an entire industry or portion thereof with no competitors. Buying skype hardly qualifies as this.

My point is that the example you used "If they want to go green stop printing thousands of memos and forwarding them around the office daily" doesn't apply to the real world nowadays. Heck, you even stated that your office uses email for simple correspondence, or as the rest of us call them, memos.
