There is nothing wrong with paying fees for mutual funds. What matters is the net gain. He’s not wrong about the returns. The problem is that most people are not going to put in the effort to find the best funds and to keep watching them. In the end, ETF’s are probably better for most people.

For me, I found putting my finances on autopilot (somewhat) to help. Not so much that I don’t know what’s going on, but enough that the bills are paid and money goes into savings.
