I think a big part of it is the reluctance to teach more international classes. Even world history classes seem to focus entirely on Europe and maybe some broad strokes of Asia.

It really does stick with you in ways you don’t really notice until it’s way too late or you never notice. I spent 11 years with an abusive girlfriend thinking that’s just the way things are supposed to be... And I’m done sharing for the day.

Yeah, Argentina isn’t exactly the most politically correct place on earth. Every other soccer player is “el chino” or “el negro”. It’s not meant to be an insult or anything, the “Spic” and “dirty mexican” I got here kinda had a different tone to it.

Were you born here? One of the more common ones for me was “Spic” or “Dirty Mexican”, which I think says more about how incredibly ignorant racists are that anything south of Texas is Mexico... Then again, I’ve had an actual teacher tell me that Argentina was the capital of Brazil, so...

I really don’t want to get into it too much, but the heavier stuff which I wouldn’t share as openly as I did this, left some scars that affect my day to day. Not really eager to post about that though.

I can only imagine what it could be like to be the only black kid. I didn’t immediately stand out to the people in my school. It was one time early on when they overheard me speaking in Spanish to my mother that the switch from nobody to target happened.

Honestly that’s a good situation to be in for your son. Being totally alone is beyond awful. I never handled it well because racist/xenophobic bullying really makes you feel like you’re alone in the world. When you’re bullied for liking video games or something like that you can kind of fall back on having other people in the school who like games, but when you’re the only other person from a specific country…
