I dont think my corolla was geared for high speeds. It wasn’t broken, though it was certainly not in peak condition either. Im sure brand new it could have gone a little faster. Here is a cool little article about the 1.6l, but it also talks about how gutless the 1.2 was.

I had a manual 1972 corolla with a 1.2l rated at 62hp (which it was definitely not achieving when I owned it). It felt dangerously underpowered on any road with a speed limit of 45+. It could not get past 60mph on flat ground (did make it to 70 downhill), and was out accelerated by big rigs.
