Because the pilot has plenty of other things to do to keep him busy without checking even more instruments. They likely DO have some of these instruments available, but chase vehicles (including other aircraft) are pretty standard fare when you’re talking about a highly complex aircraft like this.

The structure wouldn’t have been the heavy part considering how small the gear was and that it carried very little load. The hydraulic system required to stow the landing gear, however, would would have been a massive weight penalty.
