I think what scares most of the GOP establishment is that the true republicans, the ones that honestly believe in the sanctity of the constitution and its amendments, have felt their voting base believed the same. They’ve now seen that their voters are voting in droves for someone who honestly couldn’t give a shit

One, America is not fascist. Two, you diminish the struggle of minorities in America by comparing representation at awards ceremonies to the organised extermination entire races and minorities of people.

Wait, we’re invoking the Nazis now?

Soccer is not white dominated. It’s pretty evenly represented between hispanic, white and black players. Rugby also pretty evenly matches the ethnic makeups of the countries (primarily Commonwealth) of where it is popular. 7 of the All Blacks squad are Maori for example.

Well, it’s not like a police officer can see someone walking down the street and tell he’s a catholic or a jewish person, can he?

Well, they can’t be president. There’s always that legally-sanctioned discrimination.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from being on Jezebel, it’s that willful blindness when it comes to sexual assault isn’t that shocking. Dreadful, yes.

He was a local celebrity in my area (slightly before my time, I have vague memories of Jim’ll Fix it), since this new broke, my parents told me he had a reputation in the area of hooking up with lots of young women, but the reputation was young women not girls.

I don’t think that was the reasoning behind it. I assume we’ll here more about the reasoning in a few days. But a) I don’t think the BBC ever thought it would be able to hush this report up and b) firing a massively popular personality is the exact opposite of burying something.

I never actually learnt latin, I only remember the phrase dulce et decorum est from the poem of the same name.

I’ve been called worse. I don’t really mind. Plus he/she has been civil to me, at least.

Lots of people who can swim drown. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t teach them to swim. This metaphor is turning out to be surprisingly sturdy.

Screw it, I’d take one for the team. The wife might disapprove, but dulce et decorum est pro patria buggero

You’re not at any more risk of being assaulted for not taking lessons, sure. You’re in more danger if it ever should happen to you though. The same way learning to swim doesn’t make you less likely to fall off a bridge into a lake, but gives you a better chance of surviving.

I don’t mind a civil discussion with people that disagree with me. I don’t mind a flaming row for that matter either. Mostly ‘cos I’m an argumentative old git at the best of times.

I said ‘should’ do, not ‘must’ do. In the same way we should teach our children to swim.

Not just women. Men should also take these classes. And boys. And girls. It’s not just a sexual predator that could attack you, it’s the mugger, the woman who caught you “eyeing up her man” in the bar and won’t let you leave.

Self-defence is an important skill girls and boys should learn. In the same way swimming is. Sure, you may go through your life entirely able to avoid danger the same way you may entirely avoid water. But no matter how careful you are, you might fall in to the lake one day.

Boxing. It’s the best self defence martial art out there. Fisticuffs are always in style.

This is on a poster in my eldest’s room. If I had a girl it would be in hers:
