I think the whole separation of church and state thing, while good, is a distraction. There are many countries where the church holds positions within government (mine included [The UK]) that are far less beholden to the tenets of Christianity than your nominally independent politicians.

I mean, genuinely curious; the man was a pacifist, vegetarian, open-minded human rights lawyer who eschewed the wealth he was born into and led his people to independence in a non-violent manner against a callous, if not brutal empire. The bar here is ‘great’ not perfect. I’d say he was great.
