I’d still buy a VW today — a discount would just make the decision easier. I just sat in a mid-level $22k Golf wagon the other day, and was once again reminded what good build quality looks and feels like (compared to our $35k 2015 Honda, at least).

I agree. I have had 2 normals and an AMG. They just fit right. I suspect these are the most popular model among brand loyalists. Not an exciting sports car, but they promise comfort and refinement.
