In his defense my response was originally a bit more heated... that was my bad. I toned it down because I wanted to understand where he was coming from. As it turns out, I think we were more or less on the same page.

I agree with you on one level. Race is a human construct (and and unfortunate and pretty stupid one at that) but racism is also a human construct, and does exist.
