It’s tough - I’m in favor of it for the reasons I mentioned, but I’m not certain on what a significantly better model would look like given the importance of its function and therefore its need to operate healthily and objectively.

Without a doubt. Not all people within the fields, of course. But it’s far too important a pillar of society to be immune to infestation, manipulation and corruption. It is not something that can exist without control devices if you were among those concerned with retaining that control.
