Yeah, but that just seems like poor planning on their part. Their time to make tracks on retirement was before the kids, and they had the same ~18 years to plan for college expenses as you did, so if they didn't and are now digging into retirement it isn't a function of their age.

I would think retirement savings would be more of an issue for those who had kids early, because it typically means less disposable income that can be socked away in savings and early savings tend to pay off far more than savings after age 50. Of course that wouldn't work if you don't bother saving early, but still,
