The 8th amendment was passed in 1982 by a very narrow margin. Over 80pc of Irish people want abortion to be legalised, and they march, sign petitions and demand this on a regular basis. The main political parties do not want to put this divisive issue to referendum.

The government has said there's no will/appetite for a referendum to repeal the 8th amendment. Of course they're talking about themselves, not the Irish public.
