I was thinking much the same thing. I generally prefer encouragement to be peppy and upbeat. Each to their own.

Must have missed it. Thanks for the link.

Fantastic piece. Just the spur that I needed today. Great stuff:)

Although I’m a fairly committed Windows user I’ve always been intrigued by the enthusiasm generated by Scrivener. Would be great to see a detailed breakdown on Lifehacker.

I signed on with YNAB at the start of the year and have been using it consistently until now. It’s my first experience of a proper budgeting system and I’ve been really happy so far. It takes a little effort to set it up and get into the habit of keeping it up to date with your transactions, but it’s totally worth it

This is such a reasonable thing to do I’ve always been surprised it isn’t a default practice in paediatrics.

Docs keeps getting better and better. A very competent and viable alternative to Word for work and personal use.

Checksums are new to me. Can anything similar be done to verify usenet downloads?

Trello’s great for lots of things. I love using it to plan for things that benefit from something more visual than a conventional to-do app can provide.

I’ve long felt that Red Lobster bears the unfortunate brunt of a lot of snobbery. I think there’s lots of good stuff on their menu.

It’d be great if Evernote was as lightweight as this. I generally favour it for most kinds of note but have always found the web clipper extension a little clunky and unresponsive (at least on Firefox).

Great article Melanie. I’ve been a little on the fence about Windows 10 but as much as I’ve used it so far it seems stable and reliable and these two backup tools (which I didn’t know about) are definitely handy.

I do something similar by scribbling random, stream-of-consciousness notes in a private Wordpress blog that’s only seen by me.

I’ve had the same experience for the last couple of weeks. Sad times. I can only hope that VPN services will provide a speedy work-around.

Sure. First came across Sivers in a two-part podcast he recorded with Tim Ferriss. Full of really interesting stuff and some very practical take-aways.

I suppose if you’re not into books it won’t seem like that big a deal, but I love the idea of adding front cover images to my book notes. A really nice way to dress up your notes and observations and would be great if you wanted to share with others.

Nice tip. I’ve also tried smearing on a layer of Vaseline jelly and then scraping it off with a kitchen towel. The abrasion of the towel usually works pretty well and the jelly helps protect against scratching the skin.

Some paediatric textbooks talk about, ‘Back to bed, feet to foot,’ so in addition to putting a baby to bed on her back it’s also considered good practice to put her feet to the foot of the cot to give stability.

I know the feeling:) I don’t know if it’s your kind of thing or even where you’re located, but I’ve had relatives in the UK enjoy Graze boxes. They’re a little over-priced in my opinion but there’s some nice stuff in their boxes:

Do none of these services ship outside the States?
