While there wouldn't be Star Wars without him, the movies would have been quite different if not for all the talented directors, editors, producers, etc. that also worked on the original trilogy.

Agreed. I learned nothing from the 'comparisons' to those jets, especially since there was no link between them ... ever. We know Lucas storyboarded the battles based on military fighter footage. How I addressed that same disparity in my own mind (besides just dismissing the prequels as garbage) was that the prequels were set mainly in the "downtown" part of the galaxy and in peacetime, while the real movies were in the outskirts and front lines during wartime.
