I’m so conflicted about how they did that in the show.
While I don’t disagree, that doesn’t actually answer my question.
What purpose does that punishment serve?
How to vote for military and overseas voters
Casting a non-trans man to play a trans woman serves to reinforce the idea that trans women used to be men, which isn’t always the case. Many trans people identify as always being their gender, e.g. “back when I was a little girl” when they were raised as a boy. I haven’t seen Transparent so maybe Moara would identify…
One of the beauties of the internet is that it allows me to critique someone else’s posts while still critiquing yours.
As much as I’m in favor of fucking over the “religious liberty” people, it’s somewhat missing the point to say that she could use her court case for that.
If you don’t want people to critique your post, don’t post.
There is no evidence that she is Rastafarian and no reason why she should have to be to wear her hair in a specific style at work.
You are doing exactly what the interviewer did: allowing one example of someone who did not care for their hair to color your perception of the entire hairstyle.
The example is not directly comparable. The woman in the example was threatened with job loss due to demonstrated poor hygiene. The woman in the court case was denied a job preemptively due to an assumption of poor hygiene.
The woman in your story lost her job due to poor hygiene, not her hairstyle. The woman in the article was denied a job due to her hairstyle. These are not comparable scenarios.
Of course a “Marxist” analysis is only one means of interpretation (although I would be genuinely interested in what other lens you feel is better). But it is an important one and one that is all too often ignored today. Important things are worth discussing and so I am interested in discussing this.
I understand that and it’s certainly part of why my first instinct was to debunk rainy_day’s story. But it’s easy to lose compassion for the scam’s victims in the pursuit of uncovering the scam. I was trying to avoid that.
My first impulse whenever someone says they had an experience like yours is to pick it apart and try to demonstrate how they were conned. I can’t stomach the idea of “mediums” bilking vulnerable and grieving people and that seems like a way to inoculate people against falling victim.
Based on your stated definition, discussions of cultural appropriation do rely on a “Marxist” reading. I fully realize that interactions between cultures are complicated but it’s naive to pretend that power dynamics don’t play a role. That role should be recognized. Do you really think a mixed race family doesn’t…
One that any commercial venture by which minority products are transferred to a dominant culture is problematic.
You’ve misunderstood my post. Again, one of the problems with cultural appropriation is that it allows an oppressive group to profit off of an oppressed group. When I say that financial profits don’t change anything, I mean that the harm of cultural appropriation is still present regardless of whether the oppressive…
I’d take your engagement over your respect. What, exactly do you disagree with? Do you actually have a position or are you just interested in being contrary? These topics are important and nuanced and I’m willing to have the discussion if you are. If not, why bother posting at all?
