I-81 near Harrisonburg has spots of what passes for mountains on the East Coast. They're more large hills, but coasting at 65mph downhill to 100mph wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility. I still don't see why they wouldn't shift to neutral and slow down to a stop going up a hill.

Exactly. I had a drunk guy pass out against my car in college, knocking off the passenger mirror. Having a college kid's priorities at the time, my money went to beer and other goodies, and the mirror didn't get fixed for 6 months.
