A lot of e-mails contain tracking links...visiting the URL in any form confirms a valid e-mail address.

I’m going to guess that most people have only used MOV based surge protectors because they are cheap. These only kick in at around 330V. Anything up to that point is let through. Basically, they are a lie with regards to protecting sensitive equipment from anything short of a lightning strike.
